Reason For Mission

The community has gone from wanting to make sure it includes everyone, to actually being hateful to some of its own. Today it is politically correct to say LGBT community. But I feel that as inclusive as "LGBT" is supposed to be, it actually separates us into even smaller groups of individual minorities. That is why we will only use the term community to refer to us all.

This fragmentation is not something we need to have right now. Not with organizations out there going out of there way to pass legislation against us. What we need more than ever is to come together; to come together like drag queens and leather men came together at Stonewall in 1969!; to come together like the lesbians came together to help gay men at the beginning of the AIDS crisis!; to come together as when Harvey Milk led the first Pride March down Market Street!

Almost one year ago, we saw that there was a need for a publication which served the community. One which brought recognition and help to worthwhile non-profit agencies that help people in our community; one which brought recognition to gay men and women making a difference in the world, as business people, politicians, professionals, volunteers and parents; one that shows the camp, fun and love, that we all enjoy and makes us unique; one that presented not only both sides of every issue but presented substantive issues as well; one that showed all of society that our community actually concerns ourselves with things other than just sex. Consequently there will be no sex ads in this paper.

That is why we decided to publish SPECTRUM. It is our dream that this newspaper can somehow be a catalyst which helps take a reunited, less self-prejudice gay and lesbian community into the 21st century. We are not here to say that anyone is wrong or bad for what they do, but we do want to show people that we as a community are right and good
